A scathing new investigation alleges Trump allies “misled donors”, enriched Trump allies and distorted original plans with its Freedom 250th birthday event on the National Mall.

The 52-page report, released Thursday morning by Democrats on the House Natural Resources Committee, unfurls a series of blistering accusations against Trump-aligned officials for their management and machinations around the events and the operation of Freedom 250. The report alleges Trump’s allies outflanked and supplanted the initial Congressionally-approved America 250th operation, to install their own Trump-favored and sycophantic event.
The end result, according to Democratic investigators, was a “hostile takeover” of the Congressionally-approved operation, culminating in a flaccid event on the National Mall, with nakedly political overtones that are supportive of Trump. The report said, “The White House first attempted to bend America 250 to its purposes, demanding spectacles focused on promoting President Trump, rather than the country, while forcing partisan content, campaign-style fundraisers, and favored contractors onto an organization Congress designed to serve the whole country.”
The report also argued, “When America 250 would not yield, the White House created a replacement: Freedom 250 LLC, a shadow organization capable of infiltrating the celebrations and injecting America’s 250th with Trump’s extreme, partisan agenda.”
The Democrats investigation also alleges a deception was executed in the operation of Freedom 250. They said, “Fundraisers misled donors who intended to support America250 and handed them Freedom 250’s banking information, routing contributions meant for the nonpartisan birthday foundation to the President’s substitute entity instead.”
According to the review, “Committee Democrats have received confidential disclosures that America 250 donors were affirmatively misled by fundraisers.”
Freedom 250 officials have not yet responded to a request for comment. The White House has not yet responded to an inquiry on the matter either.
Rep. Jared Huffman, the California Democrat who is ranking member of the Natural Resources Committee, said the Freedom 250 organization “went through a very elaborate set of machinations to bleed off the resources from the America 250 commission.” In an interview, Huffman said the group was “mixing taxpayer dollars and sketchy private donations, in a way that was totally shielded from public scrutiny. They proceeded to do all these vanity projects.”
“It just became a feeding frenzy,” Huffman said, “And they profited from it.”
Democrats on the Natural Resources Committee have also argued the Freedom 250 organizers engaged in an effort to “sell access” to Trump. Their findings alleged, “The organization circulated sponsorship packages starting at $500,000 and climbing above $10 million, topped by a ‘historic photo opportunity’ with President Trump. Its CEO solicited foreign governments, corporations, and individuals at the World Economic Forum in Davos. If foreign funds reach the President’s vanity projects.”
Recent reporting said a contractor with ties to Trump’s infamous January 6th rally on the White House Ellipse has ties to this week’s events tied to the 250th.

Arguing Trump operatives are “cashing in”, the new report also said, “Event Strategies, Inc., the firm tied to the January 6th rally, has collected tens of millions in federal contracts connected to the anniversary, including an indefinite master contract worth up to $100 million.”
Freedom 250’s Great American State Fairground has been lampooned for its light turnout and unspectacular sights. Unfavorable weather, capped by a vicious heatwave, are further complicating matters. The House Natural Resources Committee Democrats’ probe also argues the Freedom 250 team engaged in “deceit” while attempting to book music acts to perform at the fair event.
Their probe alleged, “Under the guise of a ‘state fair’, Freedom 250 booked the artists to perform a seemingly nonpartisan, innocuous event celebrating states and the American people. While doing so, they neglected to provide sufficient detail to clarify the distinction between Freedom 250 and America 250.”
A fast sequence of cancellations by the music acts - including Young MC, Martina McBride and the Commodores - triggered an embarrassing wave of bad publicity. One artist reportedly referred to the invitation as a “bait and switch.”
The Democrats’ report alleges there was a deliberate attempt to “obscure” the political nature of Freedom 250 from the music artists, via a series of middlemen” and “higher sums of money than usual” for the bookings.
Huffman said, “When the musicians found out it was a MAGA-aligned political operation, they wanted nothing to do with it.” He said the fair “is like a ghost town, there’s hardly anyone there.”
The White House has publicly championed the work of its teams organizing the 250th birthday events: “The White House is engaging all levels of government, the private sector, non-profit and educational institutions, and every citizen across the country to celebrate this historic milestone. To achieve this ambitious vision, we have created a new public-private partnership called Freedom 250. Task Force 250 aims to inspire a renewed love for American history, encourage citizens to experience the beauty of our country, ignite a spirit of adventure and innovation to help our nation succeed for the next 250 years, and invite Americans to pray for our country and our people and rededicate ourselves as One Nation Under God.”
The investigation also expressed concern that some of the money raised for 250th celebrations would be re-routed to Trump “vanity projects.” Citing “confidential disclosures”, the committee Democrats said money could be “siphoned’ to Trump’s ballroom, the Monumental Arch or Trump’s attempted overhaul of DC golf courses.
Huffman said the committee’s probe will continue. “We still have far more questions than answers.”
