Your hard work and insights are SO appreciated! Especially because you can dive into them/state them as fully as you see fit . . . unfettered by previous constraints. I'm celebrating THAT on July 4th!

So Nehls, instead of covering up the statue of liberty, why don't you stay and work to fix our immigration laws. You have been sent home early for at least an extra 75 days off, and you have the nerve to say you work hard🤬

Marliss Desens's avatar

He apparently does not understand that the Statue of Liberty is also a statement about American freedom, or maybe he does understand, since Republicans are trying to limit our freedom.

Cyn B's avatar

Well, those lobster tails and steaks aren't going to pay for themselves, you know. That's OUR job.

elliemae.padme66's avatar

Yes, kudos to Scott's descriptive writing style.

Talk about being tone-deaf. Most of the country can’t afford hot dogs and hamburgers on the 4th and that moron from TX—Troy something-or-other—will be eating lobsters and steaks on the 4th. Oh yeah, but he deserves it because he works so damned hard between his Holy Mike vacations. These people make me sick! I despise them and every idiot that put them into office.

Such an insult to all of us Americans.

I couldn't even finish watching the clip with the Troy guy. They are all SOOOO clueless as to what real life in America is. Working hard? I'd love to see him come and do what mainstream every day Americans do daily. Dawn til dark. I'm sick of pompous rich white guys (no offense to the decent white guys).

Clueless? Maybe.

But I tend to agree with Adam Serwer of The Atlantic, "Cruelty is the point."

Donna Nolte's avatar

yeah that is an excellent reminder. Since I (and I'm sure you) am not wired that way, I don't immediately think of that as the point but you are exactly right.

Dee Cee's avatar

Same here. The first time I heard that succinct, 4 word statement, I memorized it. And I remember it every single time someone tries to make excuses for this administration or attempts to justify its actions. Because cruelty is always the end result.

Yes, one must have intestinal fortitude to interview these…people. Thanks, Scott MacFarlane!

I love that I hear your voice while reading this, but it gives me a little more space and a bit more agency to ask, “what can I do?”

I really hope in the coming year that communities around the country can reclaim the air where they are - so much of it has been sucked out by the narcissist-in-chief and his self-centered family and syncophants. We need to taste our food and love that old piece of family history again and focus on saving the friendships we value.

You are so important in reminding us about taking risks, being authentic, and letting great voices near and far be heard. You remind us who we were and can be. Not necessarily the same, but better. Mil gracias.

Choke on the lobster

That is what a man who is retiring after this term--no doubt with full pension--says, as he is not running for re-election. His twin brother is running to replace him in that House seat. I see a great political ad: like brother, like brother.

A literal fat cat, on the inside ride with cronyism and kickbacks, payoffs to your buddies, stock market manipulation. Good times for those of his ilk. Just like he imagines it should be.

Marliss Desens's avatar

That extended metaphor comparing the Republican-controlled Congress to kids not doing their homework and chores is perfect.

Janet S's avatar

"60% of Americans can't afford lobster tails and rib eye because they don't work as hard as I do", he says as he heads home for another period of not working (again!)

Italien's avatar

That was insane.

The boys are leaving town because they don’t want to vote on what Trump wants. This way they can enjoy the steaks on the barbecue with some beer and less hostile questions from voters who might drop by.

Marliss Desens's avatar

Most of them do not even meet with their voters. Jess Piper had a great Substack article on how it was impossible even to go to her representative's office because it is on private property, and so constituents can be denied access. Here in Indiana, we never see Rep. Rudy Yakym.

The person in my district keeps winning so makes a report around election time. I live in downtown Birmingham and the real issues here are not my direct issues. Also I don’t think any legislation of consequence comes from this district. Times have changed. When Tip O’Neil was vacationing on Cape Cod years ago he did not have to hide from his voters and was often seen at Restaurants, because like most of us he liked good food. Now these creeps need body guards.

Nehls-what a disconnected douche! Lobster tails? Bedsheet over the Statue of Liberty? As a retired educator, I give him an F minus. Better yet, how about the smart people in Texas vote him out?

Candy C's avatar

Becca never minces words. She is a force to be reckoned with in our small state, and she is spot on with these comments.

I truly hope Talerico wins in a landslide. I couldn’t even finish watching the second TX clip. Nehl’s answer to your question about regular people not being able to afford lobster tails because they don’t work as hard as he does? I won’t print my reaction, but you can imagine.

It’s already hot and heavy air in Vermont. I foresee a day of reading in front of a fan (I only have AC in the bedroom). And definitely ice cream. Popsicles too! And doggie ice cream for my best friend.

Have a good day, Scott. Hope you find a cool place to land.

Dee Cee's avatar

"Bedsheet over the Statue of Liberty" is the ultimate Freudian slip.

Scott knows DC -- everything, including the lousy summer weather here. He will hydrate. :)

Thanks for the update. We so appreciate you. Stay cool and have a great day.

Rep. Nehl’s comments are hard to hear but important to listen to. He blamed 60% of Americans for ‘not working as hard as I do’ as he is actively taking an early vacation day—-because we all can do that?! Ugh

Connie's avatar

What a tone deaf bozo Troy Nehls is. I hope he chokes on his lobster tails and prime steaks as the American people are struggling to pay utilities and put food on the table. Vote someone like this out of office!

Cyn B's avatar

Again, we need new rules that withhold pay from the House if they miss x number of days of work. Running away is not governing, Holy Mike. WE the people want a refund!
