Democrats Expand Battleground for 2026 Midterms into Redder States

Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Widens its Targets into Florida, Arkansas, Indiana

With just 90 days until Election Day, Democratic campaign operatives are expanding their target list. They’re setting their sights on redder and redder real estate.

In a memo shared with Scott MacFarlane Reports, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee reveals it is adding 12 more GOP-held U.S. House seats to its list of its “districts in play,” which is the broader, more ambitious measure of where the party wants to spend its campaign resources and money.

Among the additions are races in states Trump won by between 20 and 30 points in 2024, including Indiana, Arkansas and Tennessee.

Buoyed by new polling showing Democrats with a sizable, 8-point lead in so-called “generic ballot” surveys of voters’ party preference in the midterms, Democrats are also expanding their focus onto some GOP-gerrymandered seats that appear winnable.

The races added to the party's campaign “in play” list include:

The Democrats’ target list includes the GOP incumbent who chairs the Republican party’s Congressional campaign organization, Rep. Richard Hudson (R-NC).

Rep. Suzan Delbene (D-WA), the chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said, “MAGA Republicans who historically have considered themselves ‘safe’ have let down the people they were elected to represent, passing disastrous policies that are crushing working families and our communities. Democrats are going to win in November and make Hakeem Jeffries the next Speaker of the House.”

Democratic and Republican campaign arms periodically release memos showing potential Congressional targets, with aspirations that donors will direct money against vulnerable incumbents.

The National Republican Congressional Committee expanded its own target list in mid-July. Six of the GOP’s seven added targets are seats that were re-drawn by Republican-led state legislatures, in the unprecedented wave of mid-decade gerrymandering, including in Louisiana, Tennessee and Alabama.

The latest nonpartisan analyses of competitive US House races is shifting in just one direction: Toward Democrats.

The Center for Politics at the University of Virginia has adjusted its forecast for 13 key US House races, to show a more favorable outlook for Democrats.

The University of Virginia report cited new polling showing a robust edge in enthusiasm among prospective Democratic voters. The report said, “The Democratic lead was a more robust 8 points among those who described themselves as ‘absolutely certain’ to vote. This enthusiasm problem for Republicans extends even to otherwise reliably GOP voters, according to a report over the weekend from the Washington Post.”

Early voting begins in just five weeks in some states. Time is limited for dynamics to change.
